4+1 Greener Alternatives of Balloon Releases
In the last few years ballon releases became increasingly common, especially in the wedding and graduation season. Yes, they do look pretty, we won't agrue with that, but those balloons will eventually fall down, and often end up in natural waters or lands. An animal can confuse them with food, get mingled into it, or they simply pollute a pristine stream or forest. No matter what happens, there's no happy ending for these balloons.
On the day of the celebration they might look this pretty:
But later that day they can potentially kill an animal:
We get it that you want to celebrate big life events with symbolic traditions, so we collected some tips that can make any festivities beautiful and eco-friendly at the same time!
1. Plant a tree together!
Just imagine what would happen if every graduating class planted a tree to commemorate their friendship and community! The class grows further and its branches go in different directions, but it roots are common. Above the beautiful symbolic meaning, this would be a great gift to every living being on planet Earth. One large tree can supply a day's supply of oxygen for four people, and it can absorb as much as 21.77 kgs of Co2 per year.
You can plant it in the school yard or in a park nearby. Just make sure to talk with the owner of the place, so they won't cut the tree for a long time.
You can make a little sign with the graduating class or your names. The tree can be your special meet up point for future reunions!
By the way we take what we say seriously! We planted 10 trees to celebrate our 10th birthday!
2. Seeds of love
Give people little packets of seeds! Everyone can plant these at home, and nurture them just as the relationship. You may eventually end up in distant cities or countries, but you can always remember each other when looking at the plant. Call or text your loved ones whenever you water the plant! ;)
3. Floating flowers or leaves
If there's a stream, river or beach nearby, go and throw some flowers or beautiful leaves in the water. As they float away you let go and say farewell to everything you are leaving behind, and you create space for the new experiences. Just make sure there are no plastic or non-degradable ties on the flowers!
4. Time capsule
Stuff the time capsule with objects that bring back awesome and funny memories, or write down hilarious anecdotes, and put some funny pictures in there as well. You can even make predictions about the future and check them out if they worked on the 10th reunion.
+1 Create your own green tradition!
Be the innovator! Learn from the past or imagine the future! Figure out your own green tradition and share it with us! This way we can all make big life events easier on our environment!
Please share this article if you see that someone is planning a balloon release! They might not know that there are alternatives, and let's hope we can change their minds for the sake of life on Earth! :)
