Raising Green Kids
Teaching by example
Ultimately, we teach our kids by the way we live. They see that we use cloth diapers instead of disposable, how we say no to plastic bags, and use our own canvas instead. We can reduce waste by using reusable water bottles, and collect and sort waste that we couldn't avoid into recycling bins. They learn the cycle of life when they see how the compost works, or when we plant or sprout seeds together. We can watch and feed the birds and make shelter for them. They internalize the importance of healthy, whole foods when we shop for groceries and support the local farmers, or prepare lunch together. Using natural, eco-friendly substances becomes second nature for them if they see how we make our own cleaners and skin care products at home. They learn that we have to be mindful with materialistic purchases, and should realize when we have enough for the sake of our planet and for a simpler, happier life.
Eco-friendly toys
As on all areas of green living we collected toys for you that are eco-conscious choices! They are either made of natural materials, or they demonstrate new, eco-friendly technologies!
The simpler the toy the more space it leaves for imaginative solutions. Logi-Vár is a unique system of building blocks, and it improves the creativity of your children. It is made of natural wood, and has infinite possibilities of buildings!
Crokinole is a wooden dexterity board game. It is exciting for kids and adults alike. While playing you have to flick small disks in the middle of the board. There are concentric rings on the field that earn different points. The middle of the field is the most valuable ring. The players are trying to flick their own disks in the middle, while flicking out the disks of the opponent. It can be played by two or four players, and the player who reaches 100 points first, wins.
We store excellent model kits that demonstrate the work and benefits of renewable energies! This is a great way to introduce them for your kid! Who knows, maybe a child who played with these will create a huge innovation in the field of clean energy later! We need all the creativity to solve the ecological crisis! You can choose from solar cell powered robots and vehicles that can be built in many different ways, water powered toy cars and a wind power generator!
Art supply and DIY recycling projects
A good set of writing supply is essential for kids from an early age. You can buy them recycled paper notebooks, wooden pens, pencil cases, and untreated natural wooden pencils. We store many Lyra products: these are great because the company is committed to minimizing the impact on the environment. Over 85% of the wood used for these pencils is FSC or PEFC certified. The PEFC logo means that the wood comes from certified environmentally, economically and socially sustainable forestry.
With a little imagination any household object that lost its purpose can be reused for something else: it can be a base of an art project, or can be repurposed as an organizer or part of a game. If you have an object, that you don’t want to use anymore, but it can’t be recycled or donated, then just Google its name with the phrases „repurpose”, „DIY” or „upcycle”. If you have it in your home and got bored of it, probably someone else have too, and wrote a blog post about how to reuse it! It will be a fun project for the kids, meanwhile they will learn that garbage can be useful!
