Applications of lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) essential oil
Lemongrass oil (Cymbopogon citrati aetheroleum) is steam distilled from the fresh or dried chopped parts of the native Indian plant: lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus). The essential oil content of lemongrass is approximately 0,1-1,0 %, its color varies between pale to ginger. It has a fresh scent, that resembles lemons. The characteristic scent of lemongrass comes from the citrals in it, which make up 65-85% of the oil. The citral component is actually two compounds: citral A (a.k.a. geranial) and citral B (a.k.a. neral). Besides these, limonene, citronellol and myrcene are important.
It is beneficial in skin care due to its deodorant, astringent, and skin-calming qualities. It is an excellent bug-repellent, and it is also good for cleansing and as an air-freshener. It can neutralize the odours of pet faeces. Lemongrass is refreshing, enhances concentration and motivation. Recommended in air-fresheners, becauseit clears indoor air.
Diffusing: Pour 5-8 drops of oil in the aroma lamp or diffusor. Small quantities have stress relieving, relaxing, balancing effect, while larger doses are stimulant. Bug repellent.
Refreshing aroma bath: Mix 2-6 drops of essential oil in 1 tablespoon of milk or honey, then add it to the water. Refreshes and cools. Recommended time of bath: 10-15 minute.
Rubbing: Mix 1-3 drops of oil in 1 teaspoon of olive oil, then massage it in the skin gently. It clears oily skin and deodrizes.
Refreshing massage oil: Mix 1-2 drops of oil in a tablespoon of almond or sunflower oil, then massage it in the skin. It stimulates the circulation and is great for the muscles.
Foot soak for tired feet, prone to fungus: Pour 10-20 drops of essential oil on 1 tablespoon salt, and mix it in 2-3 liters of lukewarm water. Soak your feet for 15-20 minutes. It refreshes the skin of the feet, can reduce sweating and deodorizes.
Great mixed with: lemon, geranium, grapefruit, ylang-ylang, lavender, sage, orange, rosemary, tea tree.
