Dental floss removes food residues and plaque between teeth. Dentists recommend to use it every day as it completes washing your teeth.
When brushing your teeth, the bristles can't really get between your teeth. The plaque that stays here can lead to approximal tooth decay. Dental floss helps to prevent this. If your gums are bleeding while using it, it means that either you are too rough, or you have gingivitis. If using regularly and correctly, gingivitis can cease. Prosthetics are even more important to clean like this, because plaque is easier to subside there.
Tartar is very hard, so it isn't possible to remove with floss.
