What is composting?
Composting is a biochemical process, in which microorganisms (bacteria, fungus) and enzymes break down organic matter with the help of oxygen and heat. This phenomenon can is also perceptible in loose layers of fallen leaves, where there is enough oxygen.
The composting process has four main stages. In the first phase easily degradable materials (proteins and carbohydrates) are breaking down, and this results in the quick rise of temperature. The second stage is when materials that are harder to tear down, are breaking down to their elements: like cellulose. In the third step there is a sudden fall in temperature, and humic soil is being created, then soil is ready.
Why is it good for the environment?
Composting is great for several reasons. Organic matter (that makes up 30-35 % of household waste) stays in place, without any transporting, it doesn't get to the landfills and doesn't get burnt in a waste incineration plant. In addition, composting provides nutrition to the soil, so it will nourish your garden without energy wasting and harmful artificial manures.
What can you put in the compost?
Grass, foliage, leafage, every kind of vegetable waste and greenery, loppings, peels, weeds, plant food residue, coffee grounds, wood ashes, paper waste. Don't put oils, fats, sauces, bones or meat residues on the compost!
