Alpha linolenic acid or omega-3 fatty acid makes up 50-52% percent of flaxseed oil. The human and animal organism can't produce its own of this essential oil, so it has to be eaten from foods.
Flax is unique in this, because other foods (like soy or seafoods) has a lot less omega-3 content, so this is the most primary source of this fatty acid.
Flaxseed oil is slightly yellow, and has a bitter taste.
Folk medicine uses it often, for cardiovascular diseases, healthy skin, hair and nails, against eczema psoriasis, sunburn, infertility, menstrual cramps, and some diseases of the nervous system. Flaxseed oil is suitable for preventing arteriosclerosis and reducing cholesterol levels due to its high content of unsaturated fats.
It is also rich in lignan, which is a phytoestrogen, that helps preventing the developement and spread of certain tumor types. It is protecting the cells and is an antioxidant, so can be used effectively in the prevention and teraphy of tumors and cardiovascular diseases.
